Sonoma County: from LG to Lgbtqi

August 24, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Please join us August 24th at 6:30 pm for an informational webinar & discussion about Queer History in Sonoma County with Tina Dungan & Shad Reinstein. See link below for how to register.

Sonoma County has always had an LGBTQI presence. The earliest photos we could find of local LGBTQI people were in the late 1940s. This county has had a significant role in Queer Culture and Politics regionally, statewide and even nationally. Women’s Studies classes/programs at SSU and SRJC were two of the first such programs in California. What was happening here in the years before Stonewall in 1969? What did Gender Non-Conformity look like in this area during the 1970s and 80s? How did Sonoma County help stop a national anti-LGBTQ movement? What is the Intersex Movement and how did one person start it here? This zoom presentation will discuss these things and more. It will be followed by a Q&A session.

Tina Dungan is a life-long resident of Sonoma County. She came out as a lesbian during the early 1970s through her involvement in the first Women’s Studies program at SSU. Since 2007, she has been working with others through Lesbian Archives of Sonoma County to capture the cultural and political history of that community from 1965-1995.

Shad Reinstein came out shortly after Stonewall and has been involved in local and national LGBTQI culture and politics. She co-produced the documentary film, Mom’s Apple Pie, the History of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement. She is currently researching a lesbian community from the 1930’s. And for the last seven years she has produced OUTwatch, Wine Country’s LGBTQI Film Festival. Her work with Tina on the Timeline has helped her understand the history and culture of Sonoma County, her new home.
