🌈 Knowing Our LGBTQIA+ History Illuminates the Path to Our Future
Take a journey through time and discover how Sonoma County became a beacon for the LGBTQIA+ community — and how the bold spirit of those who came before us continues to light the way forward today.
Since the 1970s, Sonoma County has been a welcoming home where LGBTQIA+ culture and activism have flourished. Sparked by the Gay Liberation and Lesbian Feminist movements, local leaders, grassroots organizations, and vibrant social circles transformed our towns, creating spaces where we could live authentically, build businesses, and proudly exist in the public eye. People moved here from across the country seeking the freedom and acceptance that Sonoma County fostered — and that we continue to celebrate today.

🏞️ By the late 1970s, gay men from across the country flocked to the Russian River to live, love, and celebrate in community.
❤️ The devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic changed our community forever — teaching us how to care for one another with profound compassion and resilience.
