SUMMARY:Trans Resilience in a Time of Crisis with Max Pearl
DESCRIPTION:TransLife is excited to offer this great workshop with Max Pearl to the transgender/gender expansive community. This is not an allies event. \nThis is a challenging time for everyone\, but for trans and gender-non conforming folks\, especially folks of color\, it’s especially hard. We are faced with the violence\, rejection\, judgment\, and discrimination of transphobia. How do we thread the needle – speak out and fight for justice\, at the\nsame time as live our lives with happiness and joy – even in the face of transphobia\, violence\, injustice\, and our internal experiences of dysphoria\, fear\, or grief?\nThis workshop is about the elements of resilience for trans people. We’ll talk about what resilience is\nand isn’t. We’ll talk about the key elements of resilience – self-love\, emotional awareness\,\nembodiment and communication. We’ll talk about ways to fully inhabit our identities as trans people. \nMax Pearl has a Ph.D in Neuroscience from Case Western Reserve University\, and a Certificate of Theological Studies from Pacific School of Religion\, in Berkeley. Max was an HIV/AIDS educator and advocate from 1985-1995. He has taken numerous trainings by Gay and Katie Hendricks and Body Trust\, and has done multiple retreats in embodiment modalities including Authentic Movement. \nMax has been teaching contemplative practices since 2005. Prior to transitioning\, Max co-founded Conscious Girlfriend\, where he coached individuals and couples\, and taught numerous courses and workshops on emotional awareness\, self-love\, communication\, and relationships. \nMax is also a multi-genre writer and blogger\, and lives in Sonoma County\, California. \nThis event is free but registration through EventBrite is required. SUMMARY:Diversity & Inclusion with Ngozi Okeh
DESCRIPTION:As an organization\, we believe that creating space for these conversations is necessary. Join us for our Diversity & Inclusion Workshop. \nWhy Diversity & Inclusion?\nDiversity & Inclusion is a very complex and difficult topic to explore\, but as an organization\, we feel it is important to lean into the emotions and discomfort and make space for these critical conversations to take place.\nIn our introductory conversations with Ngozi\, she said\, “Racism should be uncomfortable. I applaud the Sonoma County Professional Women for doing the much-needed work toward self-education and creating a more equal society. While racism has been historically politicized and some of the resources may touch on politics\, my stance on racism is that it is a fundamental human rights issue and not one of politics.”\nAbout the Speaker:\nNgozi Okeh is an experienced diversity & inclusion practitioner and educator. With extensive experience across several industries from Washington DC\, to Sacramento\, CA\, Ngozi has a history of working with organizations that strengthen marginalized communities and educate corporate leaders and their workforce. Ngozi also has extensive experience with strategy development and implementation in mortgage banking\, an industry with a long history of systemic racism.

SUMMARY:The Lesbian History of Sonoma County
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom for a lecture and Q&A with Tina Dungan and Shad Reinstein\, creators of the Sonoma County LGTBQI Timeline. They will be discussing the unique history of lesbians in Sonoma County and how these women have made an impact on our community. \nIn the 1970s\, the Women’s Movement and the Stonewall Riots combined to impact the nation and the world. Many lesbians began to dream of creating their own communities. During that time\, an influx of lesbian women moved to Sonoma County\, creating a vibrant community in the area. These women opened businesses and produced theater and musical events. Women’s Studies programs were created at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College\, two of the first such programs in California. Lesbians from Sonoma County helped lead the political fights that were happening with the Briggs Initiative/Prop 6\, which sought to ban gay/lesbian people from working in public schools. \nTina and Shad collaborated to create the Sonoma County LGBTQI Timeline which premiered at PRIDE 2018. As they research the LGBTQI history of Sonoma County\, the timeline continues to expand. This year\, they have created two talks: The LGBTQI History of Sonoma County as well as The Lesbian History of Sonoma County. \nTina Dungan is a lifelong resident of Sonoma County who came out as a lesbian in the early 1970s while a student in the first Women’s Studies Program at SSU. Since 2007\, she has been working with others through the Lesbian Archives of Sonoma County to capture the cultural and political history of that community. Dungan also teaches a class based on the Sonoma County LGBTQI Timeline through the Older Adults Program at SRJC. \nShad Reinstein came out shortly after Stonewall and has been involved in local and national LGBTQI culture and politics. She has been researching lesbian history for several decades. She co-produced the documentary film\, Mom’s Apple Pie\, the History of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement. She is now researching a lesbian community from the 1930s. Her work with Tina on the Sonoma County LGBTQI Timeline has helped her understand the history and culture of Sonoma County\, her new home. \nPre-registration for this free virtual program is required! \nThis program was made possible with support from the California Humanities\, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
