Hey everybody!! Let’s wrap up springtime and launch ourselves into the warm summer months by getting the SoCo queer gang together for some dancing, mingling, pool-playing, and miscellaneous fun : )
Cotati is always a really fun (and usually big) turnout, so if you’ve been feeling shy, this would be a great first event to attend.
I really want to make a special point of emphasizing the importance of the mission statement for this event, which IS:
to HAVE FUN, build rural queer community, increase visibility, create fun and safe nightlife for LGBTQI folks, network, dance, disrupt straight spaces, and dismantle transphobia and homophobia in our community.
^^^ Part of what this means is that NO DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WILL BE TOLERATED AT THESE EVENTS. Obviously, I am only one person and can’t always enforce this effectively, but please please speak up if you are feeling at all alienated by either the folks who attend Queer Sonoma gatherings or by the regular patrons or staff at the bars we choose. We want everyone to feel completely welcome and included, and never harassed or excluded. Confront jerks when you notice them being jerks, and don’t be one yourself. If there is a persistent or blatant issue that can’t be resolved through loving/gentle confrontation or dialogue, come find me (Anna) and I will intervene or ask the person or group to leave.
Fortunately, this has not been a big problem at past events, but there have been a couple instances of shitty behavior lately, so it bears explaining that while Queer Sonoma is supposed to be a safe space for everyone, outright assholes and trolls will not be tolerated. Gathering as a community to disrupt straight spaces is a confrontational act. We need to support each other and lift each other up as part of that.
(Thanks for reading the PSA, feedback is welcome!)
